Exciting things happening in the Summer term
The Summer term of Year 12 has a ‘Careers’ focus, as it is the time when Year 12 students need to thinking carefully about their plans for when they finish Bishop Challoner Sixth Form and beyond. This is what Year 12 students have to look forward to after Easter to help them prepare for these important decisions:
Summer term 1:
Launch assembly: We begin the summer term with an assembly so that all of Year 12 know what to expect throughout the term.
Wednesday afternoon workshops: Students contemplating making an Oxbridge application will receive a number of live sessions from Keble College, Oxford. Sessions will include: Oxbridge explained, Personal Statements, Applications and Experiences and a Personal account of Oxbridge.
‘Pop up’ Lunchtime Careers events: Virgin Media will be the first organisation coming in to discuss their Apprenticeship opportunities with Sixth Form students. Anyone interested in any of the following apprenticeship schemes should go to the Common room during lunchtime and talk to the visitors from Virgin media: Field Engineer Apprentice, Associate Product Management Apprentice, Business Administrator Apprentice, Commercial Associate Apprentice, Compliance Project Manager Apprentice, Cyber Security Apprentice, Digital Marketing Apprentice, Fibre Engineer Apprentice, Planner Apprentice, and Project Manager Apprentice
Year 12 ‘Thinking outside the Box’ session: Designed to challenge the thinking of our Year 12 students about the subjects they can study at university, this session will either help students to feel sure about the subject they may wish to study, or, give them other ideas to explore over the summer.
Form time sessions: Year 12 students will have weekly form time sessions which will aim to answer any questions student might have about the UCAS process, how to choose universities and courses, living away from home and accommodation.
Summer term 2:
Wednesday afternoon workshops: The following sessions will run on Wednesday afternoons in place of Enrichment for this second half of the summer term: Post 18 Options review, Degree Apprenticeships Explained, All about Higher Education, Registering for UCAS and Work Experience preparation.
Form time sessions: Year 12 students will have a form time session on Student Finance.
Year 12 visit to University of Birmingham open day (24th June): Students will meet staff at the University and visit the most suitable talks for them and tours of the facilities or accommodation etc.
HE Fair: Students will get the opportunity to talk to a range of different universities and also apprenticeship providers to discuss their Post 18 plans.
Work experience 11th-15th July: Students are expected to complete one week of work experience. Anyone with a confirmed placement MUST bring their Confirmation sheet in to Mrs Taylor in the 6th Form Office ASAP so that the relevant health and safety checks can be conducted.
Celebration event: Before we conclude Year 12, we reflect on the last year and celebrate student achievement.
