Curriculum Information

Subject rationale – Why study the subject? What benefits does it bring?

‘Sana mens in corpore sano: a healthy mind in a healthy body.’

Our subject reminds us that we are both intellectual and physical beings, held in balance. Our KS3 PE curriculum embodies the concept of creating a healthy mind in a healthy body; enabling students to develop a physical literacy in a range of activities, whilst also contributing to their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

It is our intention that students’ learning spans across three key strands: Head (Knowledge & Analysis), Hands (Physical & Technical) and Heart (Social & Emotional). As well as participating in sport, students gain lifelong and transferable skills such as confidence, teamwork, respect and resilience, which will support them across their subject curriculum and in life.

Our curriculum makes a vital contribution to the whole school ethos of the importance of life-long learning. We offer extensive extra-curricular provision which students are encouraged to attend. Here, they consolidate the skills they have learnt in lessons and are signposted to local clubs/teams to encourage lifelong participation in PE/Sport.

Through our curriculum, students have the opportunity to become experts in sport. However, there is an appreciation that some students will never master advanced skills and techniques, but through an embedded mind-set they will have an appreciation of the health and wellbeing benefits of participation in sport.

In summary, we hope to create educated persons who have a habitually positive approach towards sport and physical activity. Such an approach will undoubtedly contribute to their flourishing in many aspects of life.

KS3 curriculum overview (Year 7, 8 & 9)

At KS3, students are offered the following opportunities that are integral to their learning and enhance their engagement with the concepts, processes and content of the subject.

  • Invasion Games (e.g. Netball, Football, Basketball, Tchoukball, Handball)
  • Swimming & Water Safety
  • Net/Wall Games (e.g. Volleyball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton)
  • Striking/Fielding Games (e.g. Rounders, Cricket)
  • Health & Fitness (e.g. Fitness, HIIT, Boxercise)
  • Creative Movement (e.g. Gymnastics, Dance)
  • Dramatic & Dance Studies

The start of Year 7 begins with an ABC block. The purpose of this block is to provide students with a snapshot of what to expect during their studies at KS3/Year 7 and to ensure that students are placed in appropriate groups. Following this block, students are taught through and assessed within three different areas of the curriculum (Head, Hands & Heart). Each block of work is approximately four weeks long, with the exception of Swimming & Water Safety which is approximately eight weeks long. In Year 7, the focus primarily in lessons is on each student’s understanding of the Rules & Regulations associated within each Sport/activity. In Year 8, students continue to progress through the use of ‘Head, Hands & Heart’, but use their new found knowledge of each Sport/activity to develop their understanding of the associated Skills & Techniques needed to be successful. In Year 9, the curriculum offer is refined to reflect possible KS4 PE Pathway options/choices. Students can expect to spend longer focusing on a particular Sport/activity, to ensure that the knowledge and understanding gained in Year 7/8 is used to develop the use of Tactics. All students in Key Stage 3 are assessed at the end of each term (AUT, SPR & SUM) and feedback is provided to them by their class teacher. Year 9 students also benefit from an additional internal assessment (1/2 termly), which records ‘Hands’ data based on each students performance in each Sport/activity.

Frequent discussions and knowledge development take place regarding how our bodies work during sport and reference to careers in science, medicine and physiotherapy are frequently referred to and explained to students.

At KS3, KS4 & KS5, students regularly take on leadership roles in PE that help to support their development in communication and teamwork, which prepare them for roles in coaching, management and teaching.
